Safehouse - Film Review
I wish that brilliant acting, exciting action sequences and a gritty directoral vision were enough, but sadly Safe House falls so short in it's most vital area; the script.
Wafer thin, riddled with a set-up that is poorly executed, concluded or even explained the story is so blind in the belief that it is clever it's unforgivable. Mix in a twist so pain numbingly obvious you can see it coming within five minutes and it's clear the script is so poor it hurts like a fork to the eye.
This major flaw aside, there is at least Denzel Washington putting in a gritty and committed performance as the villainous Tobin Frost. Washington is exceptionally charismatic, providing all the bravada that allows Ryan Reynolds to reign in a more "Bourne-esque" subtle performance that suits his style. It's a pairing you could only wish were in something more worthy of their undeniable skills. As a result, between them they manage to drag Safe House out of the gutter by the skin of their teeth.
There's also no denying it has a great set-up, which includes a thrilling "24" style action assault on the titular safe house, but these sequences only add to the "what-could-have-been" disappointment come the films conclusion. There is enough to keep you entertained on first viewing, but much like Frost's trip to the safe house it's a place you would never want to visit again.
5.5/10
